Travel Authorization

Traveling Overseas

F-1 students traveling outside of the U.S. must have a valid travel authorization signature endorsed on page 2 of their UCLA I-20 to re-enter the U.S. in valid F-1 status. Each travel authorization signature is valid for one year from the date of endorsement and must be valid at the time of re-entry to the U.S. F-1 students must present the following documents at their port of entry to re-enter the U.S.:

  • Valid Passport (must be valid for at least 6 months into the future)
  • Valid F-1 Visa Stamp (Canadian citizens exempt)
  • Valid I-20 with travel authorization signature

Submit a completed Travel Authorization Request Form and your current, original F-1 and/or F-2 Dependent’s I-20(s) to DCISS at least one week prior to your scheduled travel date (no appointment required). Your endorsed I-20 will be ready for pick up 5 business days after the date of submission.

*Note: Students who are on Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) or the STEM OPT Extension must submit a copy of their Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card with their Travel Authorization Request.

**F-2 dependents also require valid Travel Authorization signatures for re-entry to the U.S

Automatic Visa Revalidation

Automatic visa revalidation allows F-1 students to travel to Canada, Mexico, or an island adjacent to the U.S. (other than Cuba) and re-enter the U.S. in F-1 status with an expired F-1 visa stamp under the following circumstances:

  • The trip does not exceed 30 days
  • The F-1 student has a valid electronic or paper form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record
