Curricular Practical Training (CPT)



Graduate Students

Graduate students with off-campus internship (paid or unpaid) or employment opportunities must receive CPT authorization from DCISS prior to beginning their internship/employment. CPT is authorized on a quarterly-basis by DCISS.

CPT Eligibility

To be eligible for CPT, you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • One Year of F-1 status
    You must have maintained F-1 status for at least one academic year before your requested CPT start date.

    **Transfer students who have been in valid F-1 status at another institution directly prior to starting their academic program at UCLA will be given credit for such F-1 status

  • Enrollment in an Individual Studies Course

    • Students Who Have Not Advanced to Candidacy (ATC): must enroll in a 596 course (or equivalent) in the same term they are requesting CPT authorization. If your internship/employment opportunity is during Summer, you must be enrolled in an Individual Studies course during Summer Session A or C.

    • Students Who Have Advanced to Candidacy (ATC): enrollment in an individual studies course not required.

    • Students in the following degree programs:
      Social Welfare, Public Health, Public Policy, Clinical Psychology, Nursing, and Environmental Science that have a mandatory internship requirement are also not required to enroll in an individual studies course.

      **Failure to complete your CPT course will result in termination of your F-1 status.

      **You must maintain full-time enrollment (including CPT course units) during the academic year (Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters). Full-time enrollment is not required for Summer.

      **Graduate students on filing fee status are not eligible for CPT authorization.

Please follow the steps below to request for Curricular Practical Training (CPT):

Step 1: Obtain a Employment Verification/Offer Letter

Obtain an internship or employment offer that is directly related to your field of study.

Step 2: Enroll in an Individual Studies Course (if applicable)

Enroll in a 596 course or equivalent to receive academic credit for your off-campus internship or employment.

Step 3: Complete DCISS CPT Request Form

Complete the CPT Request form including your employment start and end dates and your employer’s address.

Step 4: Schedule an Appointment with DCISS

Schedule an appointment with an F-1 counselor to submit your CPT Request form and employment verification/offer letter (appointment required). Your new CPT I-20 will be ready for pick up 5 business days after the date your CPT Request was accepted.

*You may not start working until you have received your new CPT I-20 from DCISS.

**Additional documentation may be required from the department to confirm the relation of the employment opportunity to the student’s degree program or degree completion.
