For Exchange Students Starting in Winter Quarter 2014
Welcome to UCLA! As an international student there are a few things you will need to do to have a successful start here. Specifically, there are 6 components of iSTART@UCLA (formerly known as NISSO) that you should be aware of. Some of them are mandatory and some of them are highly recommended – but all of them have been created to help you get familiar with the United States, Los Angeles, visa issues and regulations, the American classroom as well as UCLA campus life.
iSTART@UCLA is an International Students Transition Program that includes 6 components:
The first thing you should do for iSTART is to create a DCISS (Dashew Center for International
Students & Scholars) account. Please go to www.internationalcenter.ucla.edu to create your DCISS
account. When creating your account please make sure that you enter “J-1” as your Visa Status and
“UCLA Exchange Student” in Student Type. After you create your account you will be ready to begin
It is recommended that you complete the Pre-Arrival Online Orientation BEFORE
arriving to the U.S. since it has a lot of valuable information about housing, transportation,
UCLA ID cards, bank accounts, cell phones, health insurance, academic integrity,
etc. ALL sections of the Pre-Arrival Orientation must be completed no later than
January 17, 2014
Once you arrive in the U.S. you must complete MANDATORY Visa Check-in at DCISS. All J-1 visa holders are required to do the Visa Check-In.
The Winter Quarter J-1 Visa Check-In will be held on Monday, January 6 at 6 PM in Bradley International Hall Room 300. The exchange student orientation will take place immediately after the Visa Check-In session.
You will receive your iSTART “Welcome Pack” at Visa Check-In. The iSTART Welcome
Pack includes a UCLA sweatshirt, Dashew Center glass water bottle, reusable grocery
bag and map of Los Angeles!
You are required to attend the MANDATORY UCLA IEO Arrival Orientation immediately following your visa-check-in on Monday, January 6th from 6 – 8 PM in Bradley International Hall Room 300.
Please see the “UCLA IEO Arrival Orientation” link on the left side of the page or CLICK HERE for more information about the in-person UCLA IEO Arrival Orientation.
A bus tour of Los Angeles is included your iSTART registration fee, all you have to do is
register for it! It will take place on Saturday, January 11th from 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
During the month of January the Dashew Center will be providing many events and social programs for new students to explore UCLA, discover LA, experience American culture, and make new friends. There will be something for everyone at these programs, and attendance at one or more is highly recommended!
**Please note that these programs are not included in your iSTART fee.
